Thinking about your New Year’s resolutions? Want to get more organized? We’ve got you covered with tips and tricks to keep things neat and tidy – when it comes to your garage that is.
There are so many ways to keep your garage in top shape all through 2018. Here’s some of our favourites.
1. Get those bikes under control.
Making use of vertical space in your garage is a great way to make your space feel bigger. As you can see, hanging bikes frees up more space than standing bikes or lining them up, which leaves you more room for cars or storage. Also – having a dedicated spot for each bike makes it easy to form a habit of putting it back in the right place, which will help you get and stay organized in 2018.
2. Install some next-level shelving.
Again, going up is key. Shelves in your garage give you more storage space without renos, and help you clear up clutter. Once you’ve got some shelves in, put the things you use most in places near where they are used. This will boost the chances that you’ll put it back in its place when you’re done.
3. Unlock the unexpected.
Not handy enough to build storage yourself? No problem. Keep an eye out for schools and gyms that are under construction and try to score some old lockers. These hidden gems are an organization dream – tucking everything away neatly and out of sight, and there’s no assembly required.
4. Look up.
Here’s a spot you probably aren’t optimizing. Using the ceiling of your garage is a perfect way to stow away items you don’t use often to make way for the things you do. Just make sure your ceiling storage doesn’t get in the way of your overhead door!
5. Put a peg in it.
Peg boards are an organization staple for a reason: they work. It’s much easier to hang than it is to fold (or even neatly place), and keeping everything off of horizontal surfaces creates the illusion of more space.
6. Keep yourself out of a sticky situation.
This tip is small but significant. If you use a lot of tape, imagine how much time you’ve wasted searching for the end. A little dispenser goes a long way in changing the overall feel of your garage and adding to an orderly vibe.
7. Put exposed studs to work.
Fun fact: exposed studs are already halfway to being shelves. Take advantage of existing dividers and use them to your advantage to sort tools, sports equipment, or anything you have that needs tucking away.
How easy would it be if every recycle bin was within arms reach from your garage door or entrance? Take notes from this tip and make recycling as easy as possible.Labels are your friend.
9. Label everything!
We all know that it’s easier to deliver mail to homes that have marked addresses. Well, the same is true when it comes to organizing your garage. Label where you want everything to go and make it clear to anyone using your garage what goes where. You’ll be surprised how easy it is to spot something out of place and keep your garage neat in the long-term.
10. Create designated areas.
To stay organized, everything needs a home. Dividing your garage into areas will help keep items contained. For example, it’s simpler to remember to return your gardening gloves to their designated spot if you can make your space feel like it has a natural “gardening area” that you gravitate to when you’re working on a gardening project.
